British talent rises to the top at Tallington
OLIVER GREENWOOD battled to an excellent runners-up spot at the inaugural 250cc Longtrack Youth Gold Trophy at Tallington last weekend while Craig Drury and Danny Boyle put on impressive performances to confirm the strength in depth in the junior ranks of British grasstrack.
Drury had been lying second early in the final and looked to have the pace to win but his engine failed and he was forced to retire. Drurys obvious speed impressed the crowd while Greenwood made a slow start and fought his way through to second but ran out of laps to catch eventual winner Richard De Biasi from France.
Danny Boyle was the other Brit on form, winning his first heat. Unfortunately making a good start and battling for first position in heat 2 before losing his steel shoe and the third heat impressively increasing his lead by half a lap to win that heat. In the next race he was keen to ensure qualification but his bike looped on the start-line and he ended the day being taken to hospital where he was cleared of any serious injury.
In the B-Final Matt Saul beat Lloyd Barrett in a thriller that went to the wire while Ashley Hill won the C-Final.
In the 125cc class British Champion Jack Cornes made poor starts all day and suffered in the Final taking sixth behind unbeaten on the day winner Michael Haertel from Germany. In the B-Final Zac Wajtknect took third for Britain.
In the top quality 500cc support class the racing was close-fought through the heats before reigning Masters Champion Lewis Denham took the honours ahead of Paul Cooper and Jamie Rodgers in a thrilling race.
The superb track and facility at Tallington will be used again on 22nd August for the British Championship. Featuring the best in 500cc solos and the big 1000cc sidecars as well as support classes, this will be an event not to be missed. Tickets cost 10.00 for Adults, 7.50 Concessions; 5.00 14-18 yr olds and under 14 free.
